Indiana University-Purdue University-Indianapolis2017 Institution Survey
Institutional requirements and goals--Writing Requirement
What does the writing requirement at your institution consist of?
First-year composition predominately taught by English and/or Writing department (FYC)
Are there curricular requirements that are not part of the writing requirement but that have writing as an explicit goal?
Yes
What other curricular requirements have writing as an explicit goal?
one of our Principles of Undergraduate Learning is Core Communication, which includes writing. Also, many degree programs on campus have a second-level writing requirement, which may include courses taught by our Writing Program, or a course taught in that particular School (such as Engineering or Business)
Is oral communication a component of an institutional writing requirement?
Oral communication is a separate general education requirement.
Institutional requirements and goals--College Writing Goals
What are other approaches to assessment of institutional goals?
For a while, courses that identified Core Communication as a central Principle of Undergraduate Learning would rank students' performance on that PUL in that course. I'm not sure how the goals are being assessed now, as this assessment is diffuse and ever-evolving.
Institutional requirements and goals--Writing Committee

What is the content for the first or only semester of FYC? Check all that apply - Other - Text
Our FYC course has outcomes in common, with an emphasis on rhetorical reading and writing. Students typically work with published non-fiction texts of various kinds (including scholarly and other articles, print and online, as well as books, videos, films, and images). Some emphasis is put on information literacy. Analysis is emphasized more than "argument." Some sections have a somewhat thematic focus, others do not.

We are always rethinking and investigating our FYW curriculum and I think that will continue. Administrative support might change as the School of Liberal Arts is adopting a new formula for administrative support course re-assignments that could affect writing program administrative positions. We currently have a Director of Writing and a Writing Coordinating Committee composed of six faculty members, five of whom receive course re-assignment.
Upper Level Writing Courses--Upper Level Writing Courses: General
How many specific writing course(s) beyond the first year does your institution require all students to take? For example, such a course could be a sophomore or junior-level course taught by English or writing faculty. We are NOT asking about writing-intensive courses. The WAC section of the Census will ask about those courses.

Our graduate program is likely to see some changes as well, including more online offerings.

Writing centers--Changes
Since the academic year 2012/13 have there been changes to the writing center at your institution (not including staffing)?
Yes
What other changes have been made to the writing center?
I cannot really begin to describe the changes using this checklist. A TT Director was hired after 33 years of direction by a NTT director, so there was a lot of shifting in terms of how the Center operates and is administered. Some programs ended. Others were suspended. Some were added. The administrative structure has changed significantly.
Since the academic year 2012/13 have there been changes to the staffing or administration of the writing center at your institution?
Yes
What changes were made to the staffing or administration of the writing center?
Writing Center Administrator position converted to tenure track
Peer tutor positions increased
Graduate positions increased
Professional tutor positions decreased
What other changes have been made to the staffing or administration of the writing center?
by "professional" I am indicating the faculty consultants were dropped or decreased
Feel free to explain these upcoming changes.
We recently hired an assistant director and incorporated a few graduate assistantships to support the administration of the Center. We have moved in a direction to support more professional development of the consultants and create sustainable programming through a committee structure. This will likely take some time to stabilize and is occurring while our funding unit is undergoing financial difficulty, so the future is complicated.
